The Adrenal Glands and the Molecular Programs controlling Glucocorticoid Production & Release

I use in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro tools to better understand the molecular mechanisms maintaining appropriate glucocorticoid production across lifespan.

Blue Abstract Background

About me

My name is Typhanie Dumontet, I am a research assistant professor at the University of Michigan, USA, in Dr. Gary Hammer’s laboratory, Department of Metabolism Endocrinology and Diabetes. I grew up in the central region of France, called ‘Berry’ and I did my graduate studies in cell biology, genetics and physiology at the University of Clermont-Ferrand.

My passion for endocrinology and the adrenal glands started in 2011 as an undergrad student in Dr. Antoine Martinez’s lab at the GReD institute, France.  After obtaining my master’s degree, I became particularly interested in understanding how the deregulation of signaling pathways and transcriptional programs might contribute to endocrine pathologies in humans, including Cushing syndrome. My work is motivated by challenges faced by patients suffering from dysregulation of glucocorticoid production.

My Ph.D. work (2013-2017) focused on understanding the origin of adrenal lesions in Carney Complex, a rare genetic disease that affects organ homeostasis in both connective and endocrine tissues.

I moved to the United States in 2018, where I continued studying the adrenal glands as a post-doctoral fellow (2018-2022) in Dr. Gary Hammer’s lab at the University of Michigan. I focused on understanding the rules that govern adrenal differentiation, and I mainly study the zone that produces the glucocorticoids, the zona fasciculata. I received funding from the Center for Cell Plasticity and Organ Design at the University of Michigan and the International Fund for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia. I am also a co-investigator on a R01 grant from the NIH with Dr. Gary Hammer.

My long-term goal is to acquire the necessary training, skills, and experience to establish myself as an independent investigator by implementing new technology and mouse models to address pathologic and therapeutic challenges of adrenal diseases. In Dr. Hammer's lab, I am continuously training students and post docs and I am committed to fostering the development and success of the next generation of scientists.

When I am not in lab, I love spending time outside, biking, hiking, skiing and swimming in the Great Lakes. I occasionally participate in triathlons.
